The Angel
We are born into this world, helpless, dependent
upon those who would care
growing if fortunate, healthy and strong
to endure and survive elements
of a callous and brutal world.
Satan sends his demons to taunt and to tempt.
They kill, steal and destroy those who cannot withstand.

 

One day I saw an Angel, though I did not know at first.
He looked like you and me, no halo nor
wings did he sport.
He wore blue jeans and a jacket which were quite worn;
His hair long, a lustrous brown pulled back by a band.

 

As I slipped from consciousness I noticed in His ear
a single golden crucifix - and I called out to God...
When I awoke, around me was a crowd.

 

As the ambulance's gurney wheeled me away
over my shoulder I saw
my totally bent and burned-up car.
Of all the faces above me, medics, by-lookers -
His was not there.

 

I managed to ask in deep painful gasps about the young man
with the crucifix in His ear.
No one had seen Him nor knew how I got out
of the burning vehicle which
I had hoped would be my grave.
Vaguely, I remembered Him lifting me safely, softly away.

 

When again I awoke it was from a hospital bed.
As I opened my eyes I saw Him standing beside me
softly holding my hand, this - the
young man with the golden crucifix in His ear.

 

With a smile radiant He squeezed my hand
tears streaming down my face
I knew I was going to be all right.

 

"I didn't deserve to be saved..." was all I could say.
He simply smiled and kissed my forehead
speaking only these words:

 

"God loves you and your life is not yours to take
because He created it.
Find meaning to this."

 

The morning after as sunlight streamed through
the hospital window, a peace
like the warmth of sunshine enveloped my soul.

 

I had learned from the Angel with the crucifix in His ear,
that my days had purpose
I had never known - finally
meaning to all of this.

 

This day I knew why I had been born.
